Summer Camps 2018

I design age-appropriate, creative, and joy-filled art based summer camps.  Each course is intended to nurture and grow the artist in every child. Students will be introduced to artists and illustrators, while having plenty of time to create their own stunning works of art.

As Extended Day Teacher at Durham Early School, my approach is heavily influenced by Reggio Emilia, and Quaker philosophy, which invites the child to participate as a fully formed artist in their own right. Although I structure camps, and design a flexible curriculum for the week, every student is given the space to create the artwork that calls them. I anticipate and encourage students to take different meaning from our discussions, and follow diverging artistic inspirations.

Location: My studio is located in a private residence on Chapel Hill Rd in the Tuscaloosa/Lakewood neighborhood of Durham. Once your registration has been confirmed I'll send additional details.

Accessibility Info: My studio is currently not wheelchair accessible. My studio is nut-free and low-scent. Two kittens live in my apartment (which is connected to my studio), however they are NOT allowed in the studio.

I am committed to affordable arts education. Sliding-Scales are available! Please let me know if you are interested in discussing what would be affordable for your family.

Join us for a week of bright and brilliant art making! We'll be listening to music while we let the colors dance across the page!

We'll be paying special attention to the ways illustrators use art to draw us further into the musical experience. Students will then listen to the genre of music from the book and create their own works of art in response.

Some of the books we'll read are Me Llamo Celia: The Life of Celia Cruz by Monica Brown, Symphony City by Amy Martin, Muddy: The Story of Blues Legend Muddy Waters by Michael Mahin, Tito Puente: Mambo King by Monica Brown, Hip Cat by Jonathan London.

I Am The Blue And The Blue Is Me

Come discover how artists bring a simple story to life! Artists know many secrets to draw you into the story. We will learn how artists play and make jokes in their illustrations; and why that is important in story telling!

In this observation and art focused camp we will look at the ways illustrators of Children's books create and communicate narrative. We'll be looking at a selection of books each day with a common theme. We'll discuss what the pictures communicate, then using our own imaginations we'll create artworks that tell a story!

Some of the artistic techniques we'll be exploring are visual metaphors, hidden symbols, and sequential storytelling.

The Joy Of The Feeling

Join us for a week of heart-driven art making! We'll be refining our art making skills, all while learning about artists; many of whom are still making art, and growing as artists!

This Camp is designed for an older age range. We will look at the work of a new artist each day, discussing how the work effects us. From there we'll dive into our studio practice (including warm-ups and skill building exercises); creating work of our own that are in conversation with the artist we have been discussing. Some of the mediums we'll explore are watercolor, acrylic, collage, printmaking and mixed media.

The artists we'll be discussing are Frida Kahlo, Yayoi Kusama, Shazia Sikander, Ai Wei Wei, and Nick Cave (the visual artist).
